Rednet (Zhangjiajie): Crossing the 300-year-old gate, one can be impressed by the first sight of a Diaojiaoluo building; even it is now the office of Village party committee in Shiyanping village. It’s a pity not to take a whole picture of the scene.
On the viewing platform of Yangerya, people may enjoy the panorama of beautiful Shiyanping village: Diaojialuo buildings at the foot of green mountains, rice fields, fish pools and smoke rising from families. It seems a beautiful picture of culture heritage in the village where has the population over 900 persons with 182 Diaojiaoluo buildings of over one hundred years of history, according to the secretary of village committee of CPC. “Rare Dong-minority villages in Hunan are well protected and completed conserved like ours, as I know,” said Quan Jianguo, a businessman who returned to his village for leading his villagers to better lives.” Shiyanping village has been existed for almost 600 years,” introduced Quan, ”as a member of Shiyanping, I am always fond of the unfashionable village.”
A few years ago, most of younger generation of the village went to cities for working, with their wishes of earning money to build a new modern house at home.
After see the outside world , Quan said, “It is pity to pull down Diaojiaolou for just build modern buildings. I think Diaojiaolou dwellings are typical representation of Tujia Culture. He knew the priceless value of these old constructions, and it should be protected with good care.
Quan Zike, a villager being rich, decided to pull down his old Diaojiaolou to build a modern house. Quan Jianguo and his father Quan Zhouping persuaded him to reconstruct his old dwelling, and they invited six masters of building Diaojiaolou dwelling to do the work with 1.2 million Yuan of RMB.
Through Quan’s efforts, villages have different attitude and awareness to conserving the original Tujia culture. Besides Diaojiaolou buildings, they begin to pay more attention to Tujia intangible cultural heritage like Hucang celebration, Yangcha Dance, Rucao Drumming, etc.
However, not all Tujia villages are well protected as Shiyanping village. Some original villages are gradually disappearing.
Ten years of conservation of traditional culture in Shiyanping has been praised, and it became one of the national key cultural relic protection units in May 2013, with the honorable titles including first birch of Chinese Traditional Villages and Special Villages of Chinese Minorities.
Shiyanping Village keeps taking benefit from its culture heritage with tourism revenues of more than 5 million RMB with 150,000 visitors in 2014.
Quan Jianguo and his villagers feel fortunate not to follow the old path of chasing the economic development in the first place, but to protect it and use it. “The facts prove that we made a right choice. After all, something is losing means that we lose it forever,” said Quan.
A Tujia museum will be built for exhibiting tools and gadgets of Tujia minority’s living, in Shiyanping village this year, so that visitors may experience Tujia culture .
