The International Training Workshop on Hybrid Rice Technology was held in Changsha on Sept. 9, which was hosted by the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology of PRC and undertaken by the Hunan Rice Research Institute.

Yuan Longping, the “Father of Hybrid Rice” attended the ceremony and delivered a keynote speech on “hybrid rice development and global food security”. The ceremony was also attended by 16 experts, scholars and technical personnel from 9 countries such as Thailand, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Nigeria and Columbia.

Academician Yuan showed the trainees around his test fields and introduced them each variety cultivated in the demonstration base. A trainee from Nigeria said, “It is a precious opportunity for me to attend the training workshop. I will study hard and promote the hybrid rice cultivation technology throughout my country after I go back.”

In the following 20 days, the trainees will have a systematic study of the breeding, seed production and cultivation technology of hybrid rice, visit high-yield hybrid rice demonstration base and seed production base, and get a comprehensive understanding of the level and achievements of Chinese hybrid rice research.

So far hybrid rice has been grown globally in many countries. An annual cultivation area of over 800 million mu (53,333,333 ha) has been achieved. The opening of the workshop not only lays a solid foundation for promoting hybrid rice internationally to expand its cultivation area, but also propels the export of hybrid rice cultivation technology and its related products as well as strengthens the relationship between developing countries and China.
