On Tuesday, the 2016 China Writers Rich List was released by West China Metropolis Daily and Great Star Media, offering the 70 top royalty-grossing Chinese writers in the year 2015.

Their income from print books ranged from 32 million yuan ($4.93 million) on the top to 1 million yuan.

Though some doubted the figures are inaccurate, others said the list shows reading trends in the country: fantasy, children's books, chicken-soup-for-the-soul type of books are popular and young readers are the majority of print book consumers.

  Jiang Nan, 32 million yuan

Jiang Nan, 39, whose real name Yang Zhi, pursued higher learning at Peking University and Washington University in St. Louis before becoming a writer and running a business. He started writing online and is known for a 2002 book based on his experiences at Peking University, There They Were, which was later turned into a movie. He made for himself a bigger name and bigger fortune with a fantasy series.

Leiou Huanxiang (Leon Image), 20 million yuan

A mysterious and low-profile writer, what we know about Leon is that he is based in Hunan province and was born in 1980. However, his adventure-mixed-marvelseries has long occupied the bestseller list for young readers list at bookstores, online or offline, in recent years. The series features a young student, DoDoMo, and his capable dog, Charlie ¶.
