An endangered species, the red-spotted toothed toad (Oreolalax rhodostigmatus) was recently founded in Baiyun Mountain National Natural Reserve in Baojiang County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.

Oreolalax rhodostigmatus is in the Megophryidae family of amphibian. As a unique and vulnerable species in China, it was added to the 2004 Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The tadpole was the larva of a red-spotted toothed toad. Due to the fact that it has been living in dark limestone caves, it features transparent skin that shows all of its internal organs, according to the chief from a forest protection station of the Forestry Department of Baojing County.

The tadpole will be served as specimen for the further research of the geological evolution of karst caves as well as the growth and reproduction of rare animal living in karst caves in Xiangxi, he added.
