Hunan will give priority to developing the “Golden Waterway” in the 13th Five-year Plan period, according to the Hunan Provincial Water Transportation Construction &Investment Group Co., Ltd. on Feb. 4, 2017.

The “Golden Waterway” refers to the confluence of Xiangjiang River, Zijiang River, Yuanshui River, and Lishui River, which connects Dongting Lake and Yangtze River. Hunan will have put 23 billion yuan till 2020, to build an efficient, safe, and environmental friendly modern inland water transportation.

It will be a superior waterway network composed of Xiangjiang River, Yuanshui River, downstream of Lishui and Zishui Rivers, and the channel in Dongting Lake. By 2020, the 1000-and-above-ton channels will have increased by 535 km, totaling 1413 km. The Xiangjiang channel Yongzhou-Hengyang section is to meet 1000-ton standard, and Hengyang-Chenglingji section to reach 2000-ton standard. Yuanshui channel Taoyuan-Nianyukou section will meet 1000-ton standard.

Yueyang Port, with an expectant capacity of one million TEUs and 200 million tons, will become an important support to the hub ports like Shanghai port on Yangtze River, and also a transit hub of Hunan’s inland water transportation. It will be significant to accelerating integrated development of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan port cluster, boosting construction of key ports in Changde, Yiyang, Yongzhou, and Hengyang regions, and facilitating collaboration between the key ports and the custom controlled areas, logistics parks, and industrial zones.

As of 2020, Hunan will have 253 1000-and-above-ton berths, including 141 new ones. The annual transit capacity will grow by 83.04 million tons, totaling over 300 million tons. The container throughput will reach 1.5 million TEUs.
