The coastal city of Zhuhai in South China’s Guangdong province secured 28 investment projects during the first Advanced Equipment Manufacturing Investment and Trade Symposium for the western Pearl River region on Aug 22 and 23.

Worth a combined total of 35.46 billion yuan ($5.55 billion), the new investments are primarily related to marine engineering, aircraft manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing, rail equipment, medical equipment and 3-D printing.

“The new projects will inject fresh vigor into Zhuhai’s economic development and help [the city] fortify its position as a leader of advanced equipment manufacturing in the western Pearl River region,” said Zhuhai’s Mayor, Jiang Ling, during a seminar promoting the city’s investment climate on the opening day of the event.

“Zhuhai is at the prime stage of development and the city is anticipating an even rosier development prospect in the next decade,” added Jiang. Basing his upbeat forecast on the growing importance of Zhuhai’s position as an international gateway to the western Pearl River region, Jiang forecasted that the dynamic role the Hengqin Free Trade Zone will play an important role in improving the business environment. The completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in the next few years and its geographical proximity to the estuary of the South China Sea makes Zhuhai an appealing location for high-caliber professionals.

Zhuhai is home to 456 equipment manufacturers with annual business revenues amounting to 20 million yuan or more. The firms achieved a combined industrial output worth 16.6 billion yuan in the first half of this year, up 12.2 percent from the same period in 2014.

According to the city’s development blueprint, the output value of the city’s equipment manufacturing industry will reach 190 billion yuan this year, 300 billion yuan in 2017, over 550 billion yuan in 2020, and 750 billion yuan by 2025.

Authorities in Zhuhai hope to make the city a world-class offshore engineering equipment manufacturing base, a national general aviation production base and an intelligent equipment manufacturing base by 2025.

Over 200 exhibitors from the cities of Zhuhai, Foshan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Yangjiang and Zhaoqing, and the district of Shunde on the western Pearl River attended the two-day investment and trade fair in Zhuhai. The fair was an opportunity to land lucrative trade deals, market products and forge partnerships.

The governments of the six cities and Shunde district signed 205 projects in total, involving investments worth 151.1 billion yuan.

The Provincial Economy and Information Commission of Guangdong and the municipal government of Zhuhai jointly organized the event.
