Rednet (Changsha): The opening ceremony of the 13th Chinese Bridge—Chinese Proficiency Competition was held in Yuelu Academy, Changsha, Hunan. 126 foreign students from 87 nations attended the ceremony by writing down their first Chinese character "行"(sound as xing ), in the ancient academy of over 1000 years, along with Chinese boys and girls. Fan Zeng, a famous scholar of Sinology, hosted the ceremony for writing the "most beautiful character in China this year".

The first writing ceremony, also known as Qi Meng (meaning enlightenment), was a very important ceremony for students before they were admitted to school in ancient China. It was held at the first day of school, so that enlightenment was given by a teacher for the most important truth and hows and whys, and then boys and girls went to Confucius temple to pay their respect in traditional costumes. After the ceremony, pupils officially went to school.

"行", the most beautiful Chinese character, was selected by all fans around the world, having many meaning( of to do, to perform , to carry out, capable, etc) in Chinese, and the most known idiom is “知行合一”(which means Knowledge and action are one) perfectly explains the ideology of Chinese culture and value.

As one of the four most prestigious academies over the last 1000 years in China, Yuelu Academy has been a famous institution of higher learning as well as a centre of academic activities and cultures since it was formally set up in the ninth year of the Kai Bao Reign of the Northern Song Dynasty (976). Yuelu Academy, surviving the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, was converted into Hunan Institute of Higher Learning in 1903, and Hunan Normal College, Hunan Public Polytechnic School in succession, and was finally named Hunan University in 1926. The Academy has witnessed a history of more than one thousand years without a break, so it is called a “one-thousand-year-old academy”. The historical transformation from Yuelu Academy to Hunan University is an epitome of the development of China’s higher education, which mirrors the vicissitudes of China’s education system.
