The Chinese capital was host to this year's National Championships. The event was the last chance for some athletes to qualify for the World Championships -- which are also slated for Beijing this August. Now the rainy weather in the city did affect the performance of some competitors, but not high jumper Zhang Gouwei.

Zhang and Wang Yu both had earned their places for the World Championships before the meet. Zhang would be in fine form in the wet conditions and easily scaled 2.28m. Then Wang from Beijing would try and match his compatriot but came up short -- and he would settle for second. While the Shandong native, was able to claim victory thanks to this leap of 2.31m.

In the men's triple jump Asian Games silver medallist Dong Bin would be looking for gold this time, and would go in front with this jump. But the gold medallist from Incheon Cao Shuo would take the upperhand with a leap of 16.67 metres. But Bin would not be denied as he hopped, skipped and jumped his way to the title with a leap of 16.79 metres. 30 centimetres ahead of his nearest competitor.

In the men's 110m hurdles, China's Xie Wenjun, was the only one sprinter from the PRC that had earned their spot for the Worlds, and since he already qualified he did not race. Jiang Fan from Jiangsu in lane three would make a strong attempt to earn his spot to the August showpiece -- and he would be quickest over the hurdles winning in a time of 13.61 seconds, but that was still off the World Championship standard of 13.47 seconds, so he misses out on the competition.
