June 5 is World Environment Day (WED). This year’s national annual event, themed “To Be An Activist for a Beautiful China” was launched at Meixi Grand Theater, Changsha. Other activities will be held over several days, including: the International Business Roundtable for Innovation and Green Development; and an exhibition featuring Hunan’s ecological civilization and green development aimed at building “a beautiful, prosperous, and happy new Hunan”.
Minister of Ecology and Environment, Li Ganjie, CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, Secretary Du Jiahao, and, Hunan Governor, Xu Dazhe, pictured above, attended the launch. They also spoke at the ceremony.
This is China’s fourth WED observation since being adopted in the recently-revised Environmental Protection Law of the PRC. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment decided that this year’s theme “To Be An Activist for a Beautiful China” will be used until 2020.
The goal of these activities is to mobilize more people to take part in issues on ecology and environment; to respect nature; conform to nature; protect nature; and, combine knowledge with action. The ecology and environment should be cared for like we care for ourselves. Let’s join hands to build a beautiful China with blue skies, green lands, and clean waters.
World Environment Day (Source: Wikipedia.org):
World Environment Day occurs on June 5 annually. It is the United Nation's principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. First held in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption, and wildlife crime. WED has grown to become a global platform for public outreach with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, WED has a new theme that major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments, and celebrities worldwide adopt to advocate environmental causes.
