Recently the East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve issued the 2019 bird monitoring results. As of March 2019, a total of 352 bird species of 68 families of 20 orders were recorded, including 7 species of national first-class protected birds; 51 species of national second-class protected birds; and 4 new species. The new ones are rufous-capped babbler (Stachyris ruficeps), grey treepie (Dendrocitta formosae), scarlet minivet (Pericrocotus speciosus), and Japanese grosbeak (Eophona personata). The number of waterfowls that spent the winter in Dongting Lake hit a record high during the 2018-2019 winter period. The highest recorded number was 249,069 of 68 species of 7 families of 12 orders, an increase of 2.5% over the previous year. In recent years, Yueyang has intensified efforts to protect ecological environment, so as to provide a good habitat for birds. Thanks to these efforts, the number of birds monitored in the East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve has increased.
