The National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) held a press conference in Beijing on the afternoon of May 5. It announced that the main event of this year’s International Museum Day will be held at the Hunan Museum on May 18. This year’s theme is “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition".

Initiated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the International Museum Day aims to promote the development of museums worldwide and attract the public to understand, participate in, and pay attention to the museum cause. The day is May 18 every year, and a theme is determined every year.

The 2019 International Museum Day main event is co-hosted by the NCHA and the Hunan Provincial People's Government; and undertaken by the Chinese Museum Association, the Hunan Culture and Tourism Department, the Hunan Bureau of Cultural Heritage, and Changsha Municipal People's Government.

Many wonderful activities will be staged at the Hunan Museum in observance of the International Museum Day on May 18.

Between 20:00 and 22:00 on May 18, the Hunan Provincial Museum will hold a "Night at the Museum" activity, including dances, real-scene adventure games, VR walking, and other interactive activities. Visitors can experience the life of ancient times and the unique charm of Hunan history and civilization.

In addition, the museum will launch online and mobile exhibitions. The quiz show “China National Treasure Conference” will be jointly launched by NCHA and the CCTV. The winners of the 2018 "China’s Most Innovative Museums" selection activity and the 16th (2018) “China Museums’ Top 10 Fine Exhibition Projects” selection activity will be announced.

Meanwhile, museums in Changsha will hold a variety of special activities around May 18, including cultural salons, cultural relics identification and donation, academic lectures, and micro-exhibitions.

The Hunan Museum, along with other museums in the country, will co-organize a special exhibition displaying the development history of the Chinese civilization. The museum will also hold three exhibitions featuring Hunan Guqin (Chinese zither) culture, porcelain paintings, and Qi Baishi’s paintings on that day.
