Kenya is a country with a higher level of economic development in Africa, but its power infrastructure is still a weaker part of its development. The energy shortage constrains the country's development. In 2012, the Kenyan government and China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co., Ltd. made the cooperation on the construction of a grid-connected photovoltaic power station in Garissa, Kenya.

At present, the construction of Garissa grid-connected photovoltaic power station has been completed and put into use. It solves the biggest problem of electricity consumption in Kenya. It plays an important role in promoting the economic and social development of Kenya, and it also becomes one of the largest photovoltaic power plants in the African continent.

The Garissa region of Kenya is one of the regions with abundant solar energy resources in Kenya. The annual total solar radiation is about 7756.25MJ/m2, and the average annual sunshine hours are over 2150 hours. The solar radiation conditions are superior, and it has the great advantages of photovoltaic power generation.

The Kenyan government has issued a new energy bill to actively encourage the development and utilization of new and renewable energy sources to achieve sustainable social and economic development, which provides a good policy environment for building solar photovoltaic power plants in Kenya. In this context, on June 26, 2017, the Gaza grid photovoltaic power station in Kenya was officially started.

On November 20, 2018, the Garissa Solar Power Plant project was successfully completed and handed over to the Kenyan government. After the completion of the power station, it provided support to the power grid in the northeastern part of Kenya by meeting the electricity demand of the current 70,000 households in Kenya with a total population of 350,000, equivalent to 50% of the population in the Garissa, region of the northeastern province.

The solar power station solves the power shortage caused by limited hydropower generation capacity in the dry season. It also played a positive role in promoting the local economic development on local building materials, logistics, mechanical and electrical engineering installation, and other industries.
