By the end of 2018, a total of 185 urban rail transit lines had been put into use in 35 cities in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan), with a total length of 5761.4 km. China becomes a powerful country for rail transport systems.
What is rail transport?
Rail transport or train transport is a means of transferring passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, which are located on tracks. In contrast to road transport, rail transport is faster, safer and more comfortable, with a large volume of passengers and high punctuality rates. It is all-weather, with lower freight and energy-saving transport. It includes traditional railways (national railways, intercity railways, and municipal railways), subways, light rail, and trams.
The history of China's rail transport
In 1904, the first light rail was completed in Fushun City, Liaoning Province.
Fushun Electric Railway is commonly known as Fushun Tram, which is derived from the Japanese tram. Fushun Electric Railway is not a tram. It is essentially a light rail.
In 1906, the first tram was built in Tianjin City.
China's first generation of freight steam locomotives Jiefang (liberation) was made in 1952.
The first metro line was built in Beijing，1969.
In 1969, China's first generation of electric locomotive Lushan 1 was mass-produced at CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive CO., LTD（hereinafter referred to as CRRC ZELC）, Hunan Province.
In 1999, CRRC ZELC developed China's first generation of high-speed rail EMUs.
In 2004, China produced the “Hexie”( Harmonious) series of CRH (China Railway High-speed).
In 2016, Fuxing created a new world record for the rendezvous-speed by 420 kilometers per hour in the test on the Zhengxu High-speed Rail Trade Expo.
In 2016, China's first medium-low-speed maglev commercial rail, Changsha Maglev Express Line, was successfully opened to passengers.
In 2018, the world's first autonomous rail rapid transit system was opened in Zhuzhou, Hunan.

China's rail transiport goes global
In 1997, CRRC ZELC first went abroad and exported to Iran. This is also the first full train export of Chinese electric locomotives.
In 2009, CRRC ZELC exported a light rail project to Izmir the third-largest city in Turkey.
In 2014, CRRC ZELC and Johannesburg the capital of the Republic of South Africa signed the largest export contract for $2.1 billion for Chinese locomotive.
In 2015, the ETS Meter-Gauge EMU manufactured by CRRC ZELC was officially operated for passengers in Malaysia.
In 2018, CRRC ZELC exported a dual power engineering vehicle in the metro to Australia.
In 2018, CRRC ZELC released the brand-new shunting locomotive specially customized for Deutsche Bahn (DB) in Berlin, Germany
In 2019, CRRC ZELC exported China's first EMU train to the EU, Leo Express, arriving in the Czech Republic.
The products of CRRC have been exported to 105 countries and area, 83% of nations who have railroads have used CRRC's products.
