The Hunan National Applied Mathematics Center, Hunan’s first national-level mathematics platform, was established at Xiangtan University on June 28. Zhu Zhongming, Hunan vice governor, addressed and unveiled the nameplate of the center. Members of the academic committee of the center, and also academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science, Zhang Pingwen, Yuan Yaxiang, Tian Gang, and Jiang Song, delivered video speeches.
The Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology approved the first batch of 13 national applied mathematics centers early this year, including the center in Hunan. The center was established based on Hunan’s mathematics discipline superiority, and the computing resources and advantages of the National Supercomputing Center in Changsha. It is located at Xiangtan University, and co-constructed by Central South University, National University of Defense Technology, and some research institutions and enterprises. It will focus on basic research and basic research for application of big data and AI technologies, and probe into and solve the mathematics problems in the important sci-tech tasks, engineering, and regional and enterprise development in Hunan, and around the country.
Vice Governor Zhu required the center to stand on its orientation of contributing to the national development in mathematics; focus on industrial development to build Hunan into an innovative province; explore innovative operation and management mechanisms; enhance cultivation and employment of talents; and, strengthen coordination and collaboration among related departments to support the center‘s development, so as to achieve significant and original research outcomes early.
