World Environment Day Marked in Hunan

Hunan held a 2021 World Environment Day activity in Xiangtan on June5, 2021. The theme was “Harmonious Coexistence of Man and Nature”. Hunan ViceGovernor Chen Wenhao attended.

Vice Governor Chen noted that, Hunan has seen remarkable improvementin ecological environment quality and environment management ability in recentyears. People’s sense of benefit, happiness, and security has increased. Hestressed that, 2021 marks the start of the 14th Five-year Plan, andalso the first year to implement the Three Highlands and Four New MissionStrategy. Tasks should be done in continuously improving environmental quality,to build a modern new Hunan based on harmonious coexistence of people andnature. He asked to put environment first and pursue green development. Focusshould be put on reducing pollution and carbon emissions, and collaborating toenhance effects, to achieve greener economic and social development in allaspects. Green industries should be promoted. Targeted, scientific, andlaw-based measures should be done to win the fight against pollution. Persistentefforts should be made in protecting mountains, rivers, forests as well asfarmlands, lakes, and as a community of life; coordinately boostingbiodiversity governance; and, enhancing collaborative management of the YangtzeRiver Hunan section, Dongting Lake, and Xiangjiang, Zijiang, Yuanshui, andLishui rivers.  Energy consumption limit, ecological “red line”, and lawsand regulations should be enforced, to increase modernization of ecologicalenvironment management and capacity of governance.

This was the fourth annual provincial activity for the WorldEnvironment Day in Hunan. It was co-hosted by the Hunan Department of Ecologyand Environment, and the Xiangtan Municipal People’s Government. The activityaimed to promote the public awareness of respecting nature, following its laws,and protecting it; explore the harmonious coexistence of people and nature;and, coordinate economic development and environmental protection.
