“We are tired, and we miss our home. We plan to go back to Germany in April next year.” By March 2022, Uwe Brutzer, manager of Bach's Bakery, and Dorothee Brutzer, his wife, will have been living in Changsha for twenty years. In between this period, they have always been helping physically challenged people, especially the deaf.

In 2011, the couple opened Bach's Bakery. This shop provides working opportunities and professional trainings for people living with disabilities. In the past ten years, twenty five employees have received trainings and become professional bakers. Some of them stay here, and others have found jobs in catering business.

“Of course, some of them may not practice this profession any more, but this skill is still useful to them”, Uwe said. “I hope this bakery can continue to provide trainings to the deaf, and thus they can become economically independent.”

In early 2020, the bakery cannot open during the quarantine, but under the pressure of rent, Uwe never had a thought of cutting down employment and decreasing wages.

“We have been away from home too long. We really miss hometown, especially my wife. She really want to go back home.”

Having been away from home for almost twenty years, Uwe and Dorothee decide to move back Germany in April 2022. Now, their most urgent wish is finding the right person who can take over this bakery and can continue to provide free bakery training to these people with hearing impairments.

“I hope someone is willing to take over this shop, and is also willing to understand, to accept and to help them”, Uwe said.
