The Hunan Highway Network Monitoring and Command Center said that during the 7-day Spring Festival holiday of 2022, highways will be toll-free for small passenger cars with less than 7 seats. The period is from 0:00 on January 31 to 24:00 on February 6 (from Chinese New Year's Eve to the sixth day of the first lunar month).

Based on the big data analysis of the Hunan Provincial Expressway Comprehensive Management Platform, it is estimated that during the Spring Festival of 2022, the number of cars traveling through Hunan provincial expressways will be 25.896 million, with an average daily flow of 3.699 million, which will be 1.8 times higher than usual.

Specifically, the traffic flow in the province's highway network will be relatively stable on the first day of the first lunar month. From the second to the fourth day of the first lunar month, an intensive traffic flow of small passenger cars for short-distance visits will emerge. There will be an intensive return traffic flow on the fifth and sixth day of the first lunar month. There will be a traffic peak on the sixth day of the first lunar month, which will be 2.6 times higher than usual.

It is estimated that heavy-traffic sections will be in Changsha section and Xiangtan section of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway, Xiangtan section and Shaoyang section of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, Changsha-Yiyang section of the Changsha-Zhangjiajie Expressway, Yiyang section of the Changsha-Changde North Expressway, Changsha section of the Changsha-Zhijiang Expressway, Changsha section of the Hangzhou-Changsha Expressway, and Xiangtan section and Hengyang section of Xuchang-Guangzhou Expressway.

Hunan Expressway Group reminds that during the Spring Festival, massive traffic pressure will be generated on key road sections and interchanges and in surrounding cities. It suggests that passengers should plan trip itineraries in advance and choose off-peak travel; drivers should drive slowly to ensure safety when passing through road sections which get icy easily including highways, bridges, and tunnels in mountainous areas.
