Recently, at the Dongsheng Farm in Xintian County, Hunan Province, a large number of workers were busy harvesting vegetables in the fields when rain stopped.

Yongzhou City, where Xintian County is located, is close to Guangdong Province. It is an important vegetable export base for Hong Kong in Hunan Province. According to data from the Yongzhou Customs, Yongzhou exported 26,000 tons of vegetables to Hong Kong in January this year.

"More than 70% of vegetables produced by Dongsheng Farm are supplied to Hong Kong," said Liu Wen, a person in charge of Xintian Dongsheng Farm Co., Ltd. Liu added that his company has been focusing on ensuring the supply of vegetables. And there is only a slight rise in the price. Recently the market demand is relatively large. The number of daily orders has increased by 40% than usual, and about 160 tons of vegetables are exported to Hong Kong every day.

The vegetables are transported to Guangzhou and Shenzhen on the day after pesticide residues detection and being sorted and packed in Xintian County. Then they will go through customs clearance formalities at Wenjindu port, Shenzhen City. On the morning of the next day, the vegetables will be placed on shelves at supermarkets in Hong Kong.

"Chinese flowering cabbages, milky pak choy, bok choy and other leafy vegetables currently produced by the farm are all grown in the open air. There is a relative low yield due to low temperatures, rainy and snowy weather in the early days," Liu Wen said. Liu continued, "In order to meet the demand of orders, we have allocated a certain amount of vegetables from planting bases in Jiangxi, Guizhou, Sichuan and other places."

In order to cope with the impact of low temperature on the growth of vegetables, Dongsheng Farm has improved the planting methods of some vegetables, such as covering vegetable seed-sown plots with non-woven fabrics. Liu said, “Non-woven fabrics have the function of heat preservation. Covering plots with non-woven fabrics can help shorten the germination time of the seeds and vegetables will get matured as soon as possible. This will ensure stable vegetable supply in Hong Kong markets.”
