Hunan's Sci-tech Innovation Strength Reaches New Level

On August 11, the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee Publicity Department held a press conference on "building a sci-tech innovation hub with core competitiveness". Officials of the Hunan Department of Science and Technology attended and answered questions from journalists.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress, Hunan's rankings in the comprehensive strength in innovation has ascended to 11th nationwide, and that in the comprehensive enterprise innovation index rose to 8th.

Hunan has persisted in pursuing innovation-driven development. The comprehensive strength in sci-tech innovation has reached a new level. The investment into research and development across society surged from 28.77 billion yuan in 2021 to an estimated 102.89 billion yuan in 2021, ranking among top 10 in China. The volume of contracted technology transactions grew from 4.22 billion yuan to 126.13 billion yuan. The number of high-tech enterprises and small and medium-sized technology-based enterprises both hit 10,000.

Hunan has obtained 201 national sci-tech awards, with a number of core technologies taking the lead in the world. Since 2012, breakthroughs were made in 289 core technologies in the "Three Hubs and Four New Missions" key sci-tech innovation projects. Iconic achievements had been made in super hybrid rice, supercomputer of the Tianhe series, traction technology for ultra-high-speed rail transit, and in the deep space, deep earth, and deep sea explorations including Beidou Satellite, "Hainiu II" deep-water drilling machine, "Jing Hua" super-sized shield tunneling machine, and "Deep Sea No.1" subsea trenching machine.

The construction of higher-level innovation platforms has been accelerated. Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the number of Hunan's national and provincial-level sci-tech innovation platforms doubled to reach 1,676. There are 19 national key laboratories, 14 national engineering and technological research centers, and 12 national engineering research centers. Besides, the construction of the Yuelu Mountain Laboratory, Yuelu Mountain Industrial innovation Center, Xiangjiang Laboratory, and Furong Laboratory are progressing.

New strides have been made in building the talent centers of national importance. The provincial funds for sci-tech talent projects increased by 9 times. The provincial natural science funds expanded for 6 times, which have offered supports for more than 16,000 outstanding researchers' basic research. Twenty-six academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering were co-opted, and the number of the academicians in Hunan reached 42 in total. The national and provincial high-level sci-tech talents amounted to 3,100, quadrupled that of decade ago.
