Hunan Tops China in Rice, Rapeseed, Oil-tea Camellia Cultivation Area

The Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee held a press conference on Hunan's rural revitalization progress on August 23.

Over the past decade, Hunan has firmly shouldered the responsibility of food security, won the battle against poverty, and obtained notable achievements in agricultural and rural development. Hunan ranks first in China in the cultivated areas of rice, rapeseed, and oil-tea camellia, making its due contributions to national food security.

Hunan has won the battle against poverty, and presented a new look of the countryside. So far, 6.82 million rural residents, 51 counties, and 6,920 villages that fell below the current poverty line have been lifted out of poverty. Hunan has brought about a historic resolution to the problems of absolute poverty and overall regional poverty. The per capita net income of the people getting rid of poverty grew from 1,987 yuan in 2014 to 13,553 yuan in 2021. Every village has got access to the infrastructure in six major aspects – rural roads, drinking water security, dilapidated house renovation, compulsory education, community-level public services, and social security.

Modern agriculture develops at an accelerated pace, and the comprehensive agricultural productivity has been improved remarkably. Based on the implementation of the "Six Actions to Strengthen Agriculture", Hunan has fostered featured agricultural industries with output value of 100 billion yuan, and developed six national-level industrial clusters – high-quality pigs; early-mid ripe tangerines; Hunan tea; "Xiang Jiu Wei" traditional Chinese medicine materials; Dongting rice; and, early-ripe rapeseed.

New types of agricultural business entities boomed. There are 5,410 large agricultural enterprises, 118,500 agricultural cooperatives, and 188,900 family farms. The efforts in constructing high-standard cropland in 2021 was praised by the State Council, with the total area of high-standard cropland hitting 38.05 million mu (about 25,400 ha.). Hunan's sown areas of rice have been maintained at 70 million mu (46,690 ha.) on an annual basis, and the annual output at about 30 billion kg. The yields of vegetable, tea, aquatic products, tangerines, and traditional Chinese medicine materials in Hunan are at front ranks in China.
