5th ASEM Seminar on urban water management opens in Changsha

The 5th ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Seminar on Urban Water Management opened in Changsha on November 17, 2022. The theme was "turning adversity into opportunity, joining hands to address challenges, and jointly promoting sustainable development of water resources".

Chen Fei, vice governor of the Hunan Provincial People's Government, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Chai Liyuan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and president of the Central South University, gave a keynote lecture.

The seminar was co-hosted by the Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province and the Office of Foreign Affairs of the Hunan Provincial People's Government. Government officials, experts and scholars, and representatives of enterprises and international organizations from 53 countries and regions participated online and offline.

There were three main topics: sustainable development of water resources management; technology innovation in the water sector; and, cooperation and capacity building. The participants delivered academic lectures, and shared the experience and practices in sustainable management of urban water resources, and up-to-date scientific research and new technologies and ideas.

Vice Governor Chen called on Asian and European countries to work together to address the global issue of water resources which is becoming more acute. He asked to jointly study timely transformation of production and life-style, to satisfy unlimited urban development with limited water resources; carry out systematic water management of water projects, water ecology, and water environment, to serve people's aspiration for a better life with fresh and clean water; make use of the ASEMWater as a platform to share matured and advanced technologies and practical and effective management measures, continuously promote sci-tech innovation cooperation between Asia and Europe in water management, and make contributions to solving the crucial global environment crisis.
