Just days after the so-called second "Democracy Summit" in the United States, another farce has unfolded. On April 4, former U.S. President Donald Trump appeared in court in Manhattan, New York City, becoming the first former president in U.S. history to face criminal charges. Dozens of Donald Trump supporters and opponents demonstrated outside the courthouse, leading to a tense standoff.

The New York Review of Books points out that America is already "a binational state" with the Republicans and Democrats leading two sharply opposed national communities that effectively operate as confederations under a single federal government. The United States of America has become the disunited states. As a result, scenes of "American-style democracy" absurdity continue to play out one after another.
